No smoking in Taunton or Wellington play areas as ban comes into force

A SMOKING ban is being introduced in council-owned play areas in the Taunton and Wellington area.

The first sign warning people not to light up has appeared in the main play area at Vivary Park, Taunton.

Taunton Deane was the first district council in the country to sign the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco to underline its determination to tackle harm from smoking.

The authority wants to make sure children do not have to witness smoking and see it as socially acceptable when they enjoy playing in the fresh air in council-owned playgrounds.

Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams, who represents Taunton Deane on the county's Health and Wellbeing Board, and Cllr Catherine Herbert, who holds the parks, sports and leisure portfolio, watched the landmark sign being put in place.

Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams, who represents Taunton Deane on the county's Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “Smoking remains one of the major threats to health.

“Children deserve to be protected from people smoking around them. It's not much to ask smokers not to light up in these areas."

I have never smoked, nor do i have young children, but having walked and driven past parks in taunton area, i often see young mums and dad enjoying a cig whilst their children play and run around. The government are often saying children should get more exercise, and that people shouldn't smoke around children or in cars. if a person decides to smoke it is their choice, however why penalise parents who are smoking and chatting and watching their children playing and letting of steam. i can understand it is a social thing and that children shouldn't witness people smoking as it encourages bad habits, but the children dont notice if they are having fun, and that is the way life is these days.

I think there are much bigger issues that Taunton Deane could busy themselves with other than smoking near a park.
What about the parents that are angry drunks near their children? I guess it's ok if it's out of sight.

Another example of the nanny state we live in, where you can't even have a smoke in the open air. I may not smoke but I'll vigorously defend the right of those who choose to participate in what remains a legal activity!
