HISTORY students from Kingsmead School took a step back in time as they explored the impact the First World War had on Somerset and parishes surrounding Wiveliscombe.

The students visited Ypres and The Somme in Belgium, and were given documents by the Museum of Somerset det-ailing the names, ages and locations of local soldiers who fought and fell in the battles.

Students spent time laying poppies with messages from all members of the school community at their memorial site.

Head of learning for humanities Phil Arnold said: “The whole experience and attitude of our students embedded the powerful impact a trip of this nature can have on learning and understanding our identity.

“Every student behaved with respect, curiosity and courtesy while engaging in a topic area that has shaped Britain so greatly.”

The school has been working with the museum to devise a day of commemoration later this year to remember the outbreak of the war.
