YOBS targeted several vehicles as the number of criminal damage cases in Wellington soared, latest figures show.

There were ten incidents of damage to motor vehicles across Wellington and Rockwell Green in April, up by four on the previous month.

Vandals slashed the roof of a soft top, scratched body work and damaged windscreens and wipers but no arrests have been made, PC Rob Wood’s police report to Wellington Town Council on Monday (May 12) said.

Two people were prosecuted for other criminal damage offences, which saw a window smashed at Mount Vets and another damaged during a domestic incident. The Vintage pub was also damaged.

There were also nine instances of shoplifting throughout April, representing no change from the previous month.

Thieves targeted Waitrose, ASDA, Buy and Save, the Co-op and Brocks and PC Wood said culprits have been arrested and dealt with for all offences.

Items were also stolen from various vehicles across the town. Diesel was siphoned while the theft of a catalytic converter, satellite navigation system and cigarettes were some of the five offences committed in April, up three from March.

A man was arrested and prosecuted for allegedly inflicting a leg injury with an air rifle in the month’s only incident of assault, a decline of four.

There was also a decrease in common assaults across the town, down four to one domestic incident.

Police say they are still investigating a burglary in which money was taken from an address to the north of Wellington.

The incident was the only dwelling burglary but there was also a motorcycle taken from a shed in the eastern part of town.

Throughout April, there were no reported muggings, bicycle thefts or any incidents of thefts of motor vehicles and overall crime dropped by nine to 34.
