SWIMMERS will have to wait a little while longer until they can take a dip in the new-look Taunton Pool.

The Station Road facility is still closed while the finishing touches are put to its £1.2million makeover.

Taunton Deane Council said it plans to re-open the pool within the next week and it was hoped to have a date set by today (May 15).

However, in a statement released yesterday, the authority said the reopening had been “slightly delayed” as the official handover of the complex from the contractors has been postponed.

It read: “Taunton Deane Council, working with its leisure operators Tone Leisure, is now hoping the final, finishing touches can be completed quickly to ensure the pool can open to swimmers as soon as possible.

“The council and Tone were unable to sign off the works as complete earlier this week as planned as both are determined to provide the best possible venue for swimmers who have justifiably high expectations.

“An announcement will be made as soon as the pool is open.”

As reported last week, the pool area has been brightened up and now includes a sauna and steam room, while the reception area has also been made more welcoming.

A ‘village’ changing area has also been created, complete with disabled access.

Although the pool is expected to open to the public within the next few days, it will be officially opened by former British Olympic swimmer Mark Foster on June 1.
