Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge kicks off in Watchet
4:00pm Friday 23rd May 2014 in News
HUNDREDS of cyclists assembled at Watchet Harbour on Sunday to take part in the fourth annual Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge.
In total 546 cyclists took part in the ‘gruelling but gloriously sunny’ 54 mile ride to West Bay in Dorset.
Watchet mayor Cllr Loretta Whetlor saw the cyclists on their way and many of the participants had experienced the work of the Air Ambulance first-hand.
Groups of people from the emergency services, sporting clubs, businesses and family and friends all joined together in an effort to raise funds.
Bill Siverwright, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance chief executive officer said: “We are delighted that this year’s event was once again well supported.
“We were bowled over by the fact that within three weeks of registration opening, it was sold out.
“The atmosphere was simply incredible and the most satisfying comments are those that pointed to the friendly and helpful people helping to run things.
“I thank the volunteers who step up to the plate to make events like this happen.”
This year’s event has already raised £40,000 with additional sponsorship money still to come in.
