PUPILS, staff and parents at Minehead First School joined in an international cooking lesson last Friday when they took part in the Food Revolution Day with Jamie Oliver.

They were taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt for ‘most participants in a cookery lesson in 24 hours.’

At 2pm, the school tuned in to a live feed with the chef, who organised the day as part of his Food Foundation.

Over 117 countries and 231,000 people took part in the event to make a rainbow salad wrap and the school made sure they did their part with over 350 people taking part.

Minehead’s new mayor Les Smith and County Gazette reporter Danielle Morris were invited along to witness the event, to make sure everything went accordingly.

The children grated some salad ingredients, including cabbage, pear and beetroot, and then made their own delicious dressing.

Head teacher James Geen said, “It is great for Minehead First School to be a part of such a huge global event and it was wonderful to see so many parents and children enjoying cooking together from scratch.

“Now we can all say we are, hopefully, Guinness World Record breakers too.”

Food Revolution Day was to help keep cooking skills alive and raise awareness of how food can impact health and happiness.

Lucy McCannon said: “This has been really fun and I’m looking forward to eating my wrap. I love beetroot.”

Mia Guscott said: “I’ve found it fun and I like getting messy, which I have done! I think it was a good idea for us to take part.”
