A DEVIOUS conman stole an elderly woman’s handbag after tricking his way into her home in Wellington.

Police say the man called at the victim’s home near North Street car park, and asked for a cup of water and to use the toilet.

But while he was in the house he stole a black handbag belonging to the woman, who is in her 70s, which had been hanging up.

Officers are probing the incident, which happened between 6pm and 9pm on Monday, May 19.

A police spokesman said: “An investigation into the burglary has begun and we would like to speak to anyone who saw a white man with dark hair acting suspiciously in the area that Monday evening.

“Anyone who can help us should contact DC Mark Schofield on 101 and quote reference number 50383/14.”
