Exmoor: the music video hotspot
THERE’S a new hotspot for filming music videos and it’s right on your doorstep.
Dulverton resident Conor Purcell has just completed his Creative Media Practice degree at Bath Spa University.
As part of his main project for his final year, the 22-year-old created a music video for Bath-based band Bare Knuckle Parade.
Conor said: “I chose to film on Exmoor because it’s so beautiful.
“When you’re younger you don’t really appreciate just exactly what’s on your doorstep but I knew that the locations I had in mind would go great with the song.
“It’s an incredible area and we filmed for a week at Wimbleball Lake, The Punchbowl on the moors of Exmoor, just outside Dulverton and the Valley of the Rocks a Lynmouth."
The former Blundell’s student said his passion for creative media started when he was younger: “I loved taking pictures and had used some film equipment before and just really enjoyed it.
"There’s so much scope to try and do different things.
“I’m quite lucky because I can picture how I want things in my head and then I can piece it all together.”
Conor then had the tricky task of cutting down over three hours of footage from the different cameras used into a music video.
The process took six weeks but Conor said he loves all aspects of creating.
“Some people find editing quite dull but I love picking out the best bits. You do have to plan meticulously down to the very second but I am a perfectionist and seeing it come together makes it all worthwhile.
“Some days I’d be editing til like 11pm – you get so attached to the thing it’s almost like it’s your baby.”
Having gained experience on the set of Mrs Brown’s Boys and with more music videos lined up, Conor has big ambitions for the future.
He added: “I’ve been in contact with Andy Morahan, a music video director who’s done music videos for Michael Jackson, Biffy Clyro and Bon Jovi.
“He gave me some really good feedback and it’s been so encouraging.
“I’d love to travel the world, doing what I love and sharing my vision with other people.
"My aim is to always try and wow them whether that’s with location or the shots used or even the techniques.”
