WAR heroes past and present will be honoured in Wellington this weekend.

A poppy wreath will be laid at the war memorial in Wellington Park by town Mayor Dave Mitton to mark Armed Forces Day.

Cllr Mitton will be joined by other councillors and members of Wellington’s Royal British Legion branch at 10am on Saturday (June 28).

He said: “The town council wanted to formally express its gratitude and respect to the men and women who have served – and are serving – our country.

“We recognise the hard work our service men have carried out and wish to also show our support to those who are still serving.”

A reading will be given by the Rev Tim Treanor as well as the exhortation by president of the Royal British Legion Wellington branch, Michael Rose.

Armed Forces Day aims to raise awareness of the contribution made to our country by those who serve and have served in the forces and to provide an opportunity for the nation to show their support.

Members of the public are invited to join Cllr Mitton on Saturday. The town council is also flying the union flag at its offices on Fore Street.
