A SOMERSET man has created a music video showcasing the county’s attractions to get the message out to UK tourists that the area is open for business.

Giles Adams wrote Land of the Summer People back in 2010, taking his title from the ancient meaning for the county name.

It has taken almost four years to bring the video together.

Giles, from Taunton, told the County Gazette: “I am making the video freely available to anyone in tourism who thinks it might be useful in marketing their business.

“It has been entirely produced in Somerset, and I think it is quite unique, in that a whole region can be promoted like this, which is a testament to the creativity as well as tourism benefits in the county.

“There are many other counties which have much greater resources for promoting tourism, but this is a great way to showcase how much talent Somerset has.”

The video, which you can watch below, features a whole host of Somerset sights, including Glastonbury Tor, Dunster Castle, and West Somerset Railway, to John Leach’s pottery at Muchelney, Taunton’s Museum of Somerset, Wells Cathedral, and the Taunton and Bridgwater canal.

Sarah Randle, the Somerset-based singer featured in the video, has sung for the Queen, at a memorial service for Linda McCartney at Paul McCartney’s request, and supported Chris Rea on tour.

Giles hopes his video will help change any lingering misconceptions from outside the county that it is still too flood-stricken to visit.

Giles added: “A lot of people are still recovering from the effects of the floods, but this is about looking forward, and getting some of those misconceptions corrected – not just in the UK, but also for people in the Low Countries and Germany.”
