MINEHEAD’S most dedicated young people have been rewarded for their efforts in the community.

The Haines Award, presented by Christians in Minehead, recognises youngsters who show outstanding dedication to the community through voluntary and charity work.

The award is presented each year in memory of Ruth and Frank Haines, who worked closely with charities and churches in their communities.

Judges had a tough time choosing between three exceptional young people: Emily Hayes, 13, Alfie Martin, 13, and Holly Donaghy, ten.

Alfie is a St John Ambulance volunteer with over 100 hours’ service, a school charity fundraiser and a member of the voluntary team for the Beacon to Beach fun run and sponsored walk.

Emily, who fundraises for St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice and school charities, is a sports fan, and has competed in Beacon to Beach and the swimathon alongside her Girls’ Brigade commitments.

Despite her young age Holly is already a committed member of the community, having raised money for various cancer charities and the air ambulance.

She has also taken part in Beacon to Beach and the swimathon, and played rugby for the boys’ and girls’ teams at Minehead Rugby Club.

Judge Lynne Wooldridge said: “These three young people are an inspiration not just to their peers, but to older members of our community.

“They remind us all that to participate and make a positive contribution to community life is to enrich the lives of everyone around us while having a great deal of fun.”

The awards were handed out at the Minehead Middle School prize-giving, were the trio were given engraved shields and commemorative pens.
