THE 100th annual Wiveliscombe Horticultural Society Show will be opened by a member of the family who started it over a century ago.

Bernadette Rowe (formerly Hancock) will recall the part the Hancock family played in getting the event off the ground when she does the honours.

The show in the sports hall at Kingsmead School opens at 2pm on Saturday, August 16.

But anyone wishing to take part will have to be quick as the deadline for entries is this Saturday (August 9).

There will be the usual fruit and veg exhibits, children’s classes, and craft and photography sections.

The afternoon also features a classic car show, children’s face painting, bouncy castle and the presence of the Devon and Somerset Fire Service.

Flower show committee member Angela Parker, said: “My favourite part of the show is looking at everything – I’m going to enter a couple of things myself in the cookery, and I always write a silly poem.

“The entries are obviously the biggest part of the show, and the classic car show is a real extra that we don’t normally have.

“I know there are people who are still keen to get their entries in, and as ever, we’ll be at the mercy of the weather! We won’t know how it’s all looking until the day.”

Music will be provided by Wiveliscombe Town Band while there will be several stalls and a draw with a top prize of £100.
