TIVERTON mayor Sue Griggs has thanked volunteers for their “brilliant work” in tidying up the town and says the reaction to her 'Tidy Tiverton' scheme has been “pretty positive.”

Cllr Griggs launched the scheme after growing tired at seeing piles litter on the town's streets and overgrown plants and hedges.

The mayor has been joined by a whole heap of volunteers from in and around Tiverton to remove weeds from pavements and pick up rubbish, including large numbers of cigarette butts.

She said: “I think it's all been pretty positive and majority of people think it's a great idea.

“I spoke to a man yesterday who had his grandchildren down to visit - and they had heard about our work and were keen to get involved with the tidy up.

“From me it's a massive thank you to everyone who has helped out, the town is looking much better, but there is still work to do.

“We're going to team up with the staff at McDonalds pretty soon and tidy the car park and surroundings. The other issue that needs tackling is the road signs, because there are filthy.

“We'll be announcing this month's date in the near future and hope to see plenty of volunteers there to help.”

In July, Cllr Griggs urged people to take more pride in their town and rid the streets of litter, saying “a few irresponsible and selfish people” were undoing the hard work of others by not ensuring their litter was disposed of correctly.
