FALLEN heroes of World War One have been commemorated in Norton Fitzwarren.

All Saints Church hosted a moving service in front of a packed congregation where tributes were made to victims of the war.

There were hymns, poetry and readings made during the service, before the naming of individuals in the Parish Rolls took place under candlelight by Lawrence Burr OBE and Tom Davies.

They listed soldiers’ ranks, regiments, ages and where they were buried.

Floral tributes were laid at the altar by representatives from the parish councils and a wreath was presented by the Western Front Association.

The Rev Stephen Kivett led the tribute in front of a number of well-known guests from the village and beyond including the Bishop of Taunton, the Rt Rev Peter Maurice, David and Renee Durdan and Lady Gass and the Mayor and Mayoress of Taunton.

The tributes continued after the service and the Bishop of Taunton unveiled a plaque on a tree dedicated to the fallen at the Norton Fitzwarren Memorial Garden (see photo).

An exhibition based on the soldiers’ lives and other artefacts from the war was displayed in the village hall in the afternoon.
