CONCERNS are growing over Watchet Marina’s tidal gate after it was confirmed it would need to be lifted out in order to repair.

The “extremely rare” mechanical failure could cost tens of thousands of pounds to repair, due to the fabric of the gate failing.

The gate, which was installed in 2001, is supposed to last 50 years. Repair bills are so high because the gate weights seven tonnes and would require a 32-metre crane to lift it so that it can be fixed.

Marina manager James Burnell has been working hard to try and think of a way to get the crane to the edge of the pier.

Yesterday (Wednesday), West Somerset Council staff and engneers were inspecting the damage with the marina operator.

Sam Westmacott, who works at the marina, said: “The gate which needs to be lifted out and that’s where the problem lies.

“It isn’t terribly easy and James Burnell has been an absolute star in trying to sort it but sadly we just don’t know how long or how much it is going to cost to repair.”

Mr Burnell added: “This is an unprecedented, non-textbook and extremely rare thing to happen.

“We are doing everything we can to sort this but sadly I don’t have a timescale of how long it will take to repair.

“We’re talking to a lot of companies and getting advice from them about what the best option will be.

“This is one of the biggest problems any marina could face, it’s sad but that’s just life and we’re positive that this will all get resolved.”

Staff have assured people that they are open for business to allow access for boats, but that a call must be made to the marina first so arrangements can be sorted
