THE Somerset Stages rally is returning to Minehead in 2015 and will be given centre stage, Minehead Vision manager Stephen Hooper has announced.

The event will run from the YMCA Beach Hotel, the station and seafront carparks, on April 18 with a ceremonial start.

This is the 35th year of the event with teams from across the UK and overseas visiting West Somerset to compete on stages over Exmoor and Porlock Toll Road.

YMCA Beach Hotel manager Dave Jackson said: “Historically the rally was always based at the Beach Hotel and we are very excited to have got them back here.

“It will be an exciting event for the town and we hope it will bring in lots of visitors”

Stephen Hooper added: “Somerset County Council has been very supportive in allowing us to use the station car park and this is a great example of accommodation providers proactively creating overnight stays.

“The Minehead Events Group is working with the rally organisers to ensure the two days are a new highlight in the town’s calendar.

“This will be a big boost to the town’s economy during an off-peak period.”

Somerset Stages organiser Howard West said: “We will do everything we can to make sure that event is enjoyed by the people of Minehead and that many weekend visitors will fill all the hotels and guest houses in the surrounding area.”
