THE winner of the Exmoor flag competition has been announced.

The design by Jenny Stevens, who lives in London with her young family, has been voted for by the public to be the official flag for Exmoor.

Jenny’s rationale explains her thoughts behind her creation: “The flag tells a story of Exmoor’s varied terrain – sea meets river meets cliff path meets moorland meets forest meets wildlife.”

Jenny’s flag design was one of five competition entries chosen to be finalists by a panel of judges.

The much-anticipated Exmoor Flag was revealed emblazoned on the front of a steam train at a ceremony held at West Somerset Railway Station in Minehead.

The competition to design the flag was held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Exmoor National Park.

It attracted more than 260 entries from all over the world, including Australia and the USA.

Philip Tibbets, community vexillologist at The Flag Institute, was one of the judges on the panel.

He said: “It is very pleasing to see how the competition has been heartily backed by the community across the region.

“Exmoor can now represent its pride in the unique local culture and environment which in turn is part of the patchwork that makes up our national identity.”

Exmoor will be the only area encompassing a national park to have its own flag.
