VISITORS to Dunster Castle will soon discover an illuminated and atmospheric trail through its historic river gardens.

The trail, which opened on Saturday, will be a rare opportunity to experience the gardens after dark and see them in a different light.

Beginning opposite Dunster’s 17th Century stables, the trail’s coloured light will appear from under treetop canopies and hidden corners, emphasising the texture of the bark on the many specimen trees.

The contrast of light and dark with the illuminations vivid colours are set to transform these National Trust gardens.

John Lax, visitor services manager said: “Coloured uplighting and washes, with festoon lighting, have been placed along the length of the circular trail which descends into the River Gardens, follows the Mill Walk along the River Avill, before once more climbing up above the watermill and finishing at the historic stables.

“The way the light catches the falling leaves makes them almost look like snowflakes.”

The tour starts from the ticket office opposite the 17th century stables and descends into the River Gardens, before meandering along the River Avill to the start of the circular path and returning to the stables.

Dunster’s illuminated garden trail takes place each weekend until November 30, 6pm – 7.30pm.

It costs £4 for adults, £2 for children (members free).
