NEW figures reveal that The National Lottery has invested more than £24 million in West Somerset and Bridgwater projects in the 20 years that it has been running.

In the past two decades 710 grants have been awarded to individuals and organisations across the area aimed at helping to change lives and transform communities.

The largest ever National Lottery grant in West Somerset and Bridgwater is £1.8 million to Somerset Wildlife Trust for the conservation of Avalon Marshes.

The smallest has been £254 to Bicknoller Parish Council to produce CDs of a powerpoint presentation of its environment plan.

The first National Lottery grant was £52,549 for West Somerset Citizens Advice Bureau so it could give debt advice to more people.

Other Lottery-funded projects in the area include West Somerset Mineral Railway, Minehead Cricket Club and Home-Start West Somerset, a family support organisation.

Jackie O’Sullivan, from the National Lottery, said: “In 20 years, The National Lottery has helped transform life in West Somerset for the better, creating cultural landmarks, empowering communities and developing world class sporting talent.

“National Lottery funding has improved people’s health, preserved our rich heritage and created a better future for all.”
