FEELING old? Here are six facts about our ageing population as part of the County Gazette's Care Matters feature, sponsored by Ashfords.

  1. Some 11 million people aged 65 or over live in the UK 
  2. More than 22.7 million people are aged 50 and over – over a third of the total UK population
  3. In 2010, about 640,000 people in the UK turned 65; in 2012, the figure was about 800,000.
  4. The number turning 65 is projected to decrease gradually over the next five years to about 650,000 in 2017
  5. More people in the UK are aged 60 and above than under 18
  6. The number of centenarians in the UK has risen by 73% over the last decade to 13,350 in 2012.
