9:50am Friday 9th February 2007

A TOP Wiveliscombe butchers has won a prize at a parliamentary awards event.

Thorne's Butchers, owned and run by Michael and Rosemary Thorne, won the prize for Best South-West Traditional Rural Retailer.

Jeremy Browne, MP for Taunton welcomed the Mr and Mrs Thorne to Parliament for an awards event to celebrate their successful business.

Mr Browne said: "Thorne's Butchers is a great example of a successful rural business. They continue to do well, despite the fierce competition from supermarkets, because they offer fantastic local meat and a personal style of service.

"Wiveliscombe benefits from having a healthy number of independent companies and shops. Along with the popular schools, the wide range of community events, and now the new licence for 10 Radio, Wiveliscombe is really prospering as a town.

"I enjoyed having the opportunity to show Michael and Rosemary Thorne around the House of Commons and have a discussion with them about their business. I hope this award will attract even more satisfied customers to Thorne's Butchers."
