GEORGE Johnson, a student at Taunton's Richard Huish College, has climbed two places to second in the world youth rankings following two weeks of racing representing Great Britain.

George is the highest ranked youth driver in Great Britain and is looking in top form to qualify for the 2016 Youth Olympics after smashing the competition by 0.56 seconds to win the last race of the Omega Series Races in St Moritz last week.

The 16-year-old BTEC Sport student debuted in the Omega Youth Series monobob event before Christmas, in Lillehammer, Norway.

His success led him to the final two Omega Series Races in Königssee, Germany and St Moritz, Switzerland, that took place during half term. George reaches speeds close to 90mph in his bobsleigh.

He said: "I was really happy with the result because I was one of the fastest in training all week but I wasn’t expecting that to be replicated in the race. I knew I was in with a chance of definitely getting a medal.

"My main competition had gone before me so I knew what I need to beat.

"When I crossed the finish line, I thought I’d had a good run and I was so happy when I saw my time. Without the college support my success would not be possible."

George is following in his father Lee’s footsteps, who competed in Bobsleigh in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics, and who is now a full time Ice Coach for Britain and helps to train George.

The Blackbrook teenager, and former Bishop Foxs school pupil, hopes to qualify for the Youth Olympics in 2016, in Lillehammer, and after that has his sights set on competing in the Olympics in 2022.

His next trip away will be a week of training in Lillehammer in March.
