CONSERVATIVES Rebecca Pow, who is standing at the General Election in Taunton Deane, and district council leader John Williams got a big hug from Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
Mr Pickles was in Taunton to check out the first council homes being built in the town for 20 years.
He visited the building work off Creechbarrow Road which will contain 92 new flats and houses, with 60 for social rent with Taunton Deane Council and 32 for affordable rent with Knightstone.
Mr Pickles said: "It’s not just about building houses, it’s also about building a proper community.
"It’s about homes and people being proud to live here, but also to have a real sense of pride that they are living in a place that is vibrant and exciting."
Community engagement has been a strong focus of the project and the development team link in with the Halcon One Team, a multi-agency initiative designed to support the wider Halcon area.
Ms Pow said: "This will increase opportunities for people needing social housing, but also the houses themselves will be very low cost to maintain and will be a great asset to the area."
