PEOPLE in Bishops Lydeard are gearing up to celebrate the first ever Somerset Day with a series of events over four days.

The fun kicks off with a disco/karaoke evening in the Lethbridge pub, including a free buffet on Friday, May 8, from 8pm.

Then on the Saturday a special guest will officially open the weekend programme at 10am.

The events include.

 

Saturday, May 9: *10.30am to 12.30pm: plant sale and coffee morning at Warre House in aid of the village flower show.

*11.30am: beer festival with barbecue and children’s bouncy castle.

*3pm: fancy dress competition at the Lethbridge.

 

Sunday, May 10: 10am to 4pm: street fayre with local crafts, food and drink around Gore Square/Minehead Road, with carvery of Somerset produce at the Lethbridge (booking advisable).

2.30pm: vintage vehicle parade through the village, starting from Lydeard House. Anyone wishing to take part should contact Kathy Ford on 01823-433562.

 

Monday, May 11: Further events at the Lethbridge, including a chance to play fives at 5pm with Mike Rigby.

7pm: a Somerset Day quiz at 7pm - £1 entry per person.

 

Monday, May 11 was chosen as Somerset Day after a poll of people in the county in honour of King Alfred the Great and to mark his defeat of invading Danish forces in the county in the 9th Century.

Events are being organised across the county in an effort to let everyone know what a great part of the country we live in.
