PRINCIPAL of West Somerset College Gaynor Comber has resigned, a statement from the governing body of the school has said.

In a letter addressed to parents this morning and published on the school's website, it said that Mrs Comber, who has led the college since September 2012, would be resigning as principal with effect from 30th April 2015.

It added that the college would be led on a day to day basis by Steve Moir who is head of the secondary phase at Bridgwater College Academy.

West Somerset College appointed Mrs Comber back in 2012 to bring standards up however in September last year, there was criticism as GCSE results failed to meet the national standards required.

Since then, the school, which provides education for students aged 13-18, has been deemed "inadequate" and has been under the inspection of Regional Schools Commissioner for the South West, Sir David Carter.

Bridgwater College Trust have been helping out at West Somerset for the past month to provide strategic leadership and support for staff.

This will continue on an interim basis whilst we make arrangements for permanent leadership appointments, governors added.

The letter, sent out today, (April 23) concluded: "We are confident that these interim arrangements will ensure that the education of all our students will not be adversely affected by leadership changes. "The Governing Body wishes Gaynor and her family well."
