PUPILS from Kingsmead School have been looking forwards at a series of skills and careers events designed to help them make big decisions about their future.

Throughout March and April, pupils have had the opportunity to meet and talk with potential employers, training providers and universities to ensure they are clued-up when it comes to making decisions regarding their future.

Teacher Richard Addison said: “A group of Year 10 students from Kingsmead School, at Wiveliscombe, spent the day in Plymouth on March 18 to visit the Skills South West Careers Fair, which gave students the opportunity to talk to training providers and potential employers and seek help with post 16 choices.

“This was followed by a visit to Plymouth University to gain an insight into university life, including a tour of the campus and a close look at student accommodation, lecture halls, the student union and other buildings and facilities.

“Various talks covered student life, fees, courses and the benefits of university study.

This provided the students with a useful taster of what they can expect from a university and hopefully they will consider it as an option in years to come.”

During March and April, two further groups of students took part in a programme of activities designed to introduce girls to the possibility of a career in Construction and Engineer-ing, an area that is traditionally male dominated.

Run in conjunction with Somerset College and EDF, the two-day event included practical work at Somerset College.

The girls experienced electrical work, carpentry, surveying, even aeronautical engineering, culminating (for the Year 9s) in a tour of Hinkley Point power station.

Pupil Helen Lewis said: “I had a great time – I learnt loads of different things and I really enjoyed the electrical work.
