AN out-of-work man who refuses to take unemployment benefits has spent hundreds of pounds advertising his skills in his search for a job.

Paul Matthews, 34, has printed his own leaflets, business cards, a roller banner, shirts and fleece jackets in a bid to “stand out from the crowd”.

And train passengers will soon be able to see posters with his details at Taunton Station, while he also plans to advertise on YouTube.

Paul, of North Curry, has been promoting himself and asking potential employers for a chance after his work in administration for the NHS came to an end.

“Rather than waiting for someone to come to me, I’m putting myself forward, making myself stand out from the crowd,” said Paul, who has cerebral palsy.

“I don’t want to go on Jobseekers Allowance. I’d rather work than rely on the taxpayer.

“Lots of people have said what I’m doing is a good idea, but I now need someone to offer me a job.

“It’s cost me about £350 so far, which shows I’m serious about getting a job.”

He worked for a number of years in administration at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, but said he didn’t know from one day to the next whether he would be working as he was on the bank.

So what would Paul, who weighed just 2.2kgs at birth, spent the first six months of his life in hospital and has undergone several operations, offer a potential boss?

“I’m very personable, I’ve got an excellent telephone manner, I’m very able and my appearance is smart,” he said.

“I always work to the best of my ability.

“I have walking difficulties – it takes me longer than other people to get around.

“Frustratingly throughout my life people look at my disabilities and rather than thinking about what I can do, they focus on what I don’t seem able to do.

“I’d like an administration position – I’d love the opportunity to show an employer how I can work.”
