EXMOOR'S past will be examined from an unusual perspective as archaeologists begin work on a major project to use aerial photographs to learn more about the park's historic landscape.

Thousands of new historical sites could be revealed as archaeologists examine thousands of aerial photographs.

Cain Hegarty, aerial survey officer, said: "We expect to record hundreds of previously unknown archaeological sites as well as adding new details to known sites.

"Similar surveys elsewhere in England have recorded prehistoric settlements and Second World War military defences.

"The information will provide the National Park Authority with a valuable tool for the future management of Exmoor.
