WEST Somerset head teacher Ian Bradbury, who is team manager for the district's cross country runners, has called on more local schools to take part in inter-area championships.

Speaking after a championship at Montacute House, in which local runners were up against athletes from Mendip, Yeovil and Langport, Mr Bradley, head of Danesfield Middle School, Williton, said he was pleased with West Somerset's performance and praised runners from Knights Templar, Watchet, St Michael's, Minehead and St Peters, Williton, all first schools, along with Minehead and Danesfield middle schools, but added he was disappointed that so few schools took part.

He said: "If we had a full team representing all schools in West Somerset I believe we would have done even better."

Danesfield's cross country season has ended with pupils Rachel Langbein and Keily MacDonald running for Somerset in the London mini-marathon. They finished 52nd and 55th in the mixed race of more than 500 runners.
