Eight fire engines were called out to reports of a thatched roof on fire at a property in Watergore near South Petherton yesterday evening.

The crews from from Martock, Ilminster, Yeovil, Chard and Crewkerne confirmed the thatch was well alight and crews were got to work extinguishing the fire using foam, two main jets, three hose reel jets and crews performing salvage operations.

Everyone was accounted for at the scene and evacuated from the property.

The fire had spread to the two storey building measuring 15m x 7m.

The welfare unit from Burnham was mobilised to this for welfare and catering along with the incident support unit from Yeovil to take lighting to the incident.

A three pump relief crew had to be called out from Taunton, Bridgwater and Castle Cary.

By 5am relief crews from Somerton and Glastonbury were making steady progress damping down using two main jets.

The roof and 1st floor were 100% damaged by fire with the ground floor being 50% damaged by fire. The  relief crew will be in attendance for most of the morning damping down hot spots with a main jet.
