WATCHET was awash with spots this Wednesday as driving instructors lined up along the Esplanade as the Children in Need Big Learner Relay came to town.

Driving instructors from across the region turned out the Children in Need Big Learner Relay as the 'baton' was passed on in West Somerset.

The event, now in its second year, started on October 30th and will run until November 14th, has seen hundred of driving instructors and pupils take part in a relay covering 2,800 miles across the UK.

The idea is to pass a 'baton', a specially designed roof top box from one instructor to another across the length and breadth of the country.

Steve Page, who works for Sally's School of Motoring, took along pupil Janet Tapp as they received the baton and drove it on the next part of its journey to Lynmouth.

Last year the relay raised an impressive £65,000 and Steve hopes they can top that this year.

Steve said: “Last year I proudly took part in the relay leading a leg between Burnham-on-Sea and Bristol. The relay gained national recognition after BBC radio DJs Sir Terry Wogan and Chris Evans gave us a shout out.

The idea originated with Hampshire driving instructor Louise Walsh and she has travelled in the back seat the whole distance as part of the relay.

To raise money for the charity many driving instructors are covering their cars with sticky spots and asking people to donate money by sponsoring a spot.

Others are offering free lessons with donations to charity and conducting lessons wearing fancy dress, along with a variety of other activities.
