THE Prime Minister has backed the new-look County Gazette - and praised the role the newspaper plays in the community.

David Cameron sent a message of goodwill as the paper, which was first launched in 1836, revealed a new look including new features including Business and Country sections as well as a new-look entertainment pullout, The Guide.

“Local newspapers are crucial to our democracy and play a vital role in the communities they serve. They hold public authorities to account, represent their readers, champion local people and promote local charities and enterprises, celebrating the best of the “Big Society” . Importantly, they continually fight for their communities, agitating for change, and, very often, succeeding. 

“The County Gazette has been serving the people of Taunton and surrounding area for nearly 180 years and I hope this this exciting re-launch ensures it remains at the heart of the community for decades to come.

In the first edition of the new-look paper, which hit shelves across Somerset on Thursday, the Queen led messages of goodwill, sending her "best wishes" to staff at the paper.
