STAFF at an animal charity are training for a marathon fundraiser to help cure a seriously ill dog who has stolen their hearts.

Staffordshire bull terrier Angel needs an operation and after-care after being diagnosed with a life-threatening parathyroid tumour.

The rare condition causes abnormally elevated blood calcium levels, which has a profound effect on other body systems.

Somerset County Gazette:

Heavens Gate Farm - the Animal Welfare Trust's site near Langport - which has cared for Angel since October 2014 is referring her to a veterinary specialist, with the bill likely to hit £4,000.

Claire Phillips, who is doing a 25-mile sponsored walk taking in the three Yorkshire peaks with three colleagues next month, said: "Angel is the most beautiful Staffie and such a favourite that we're trying to raise the much-needed funds for her operation."

Claire, along with Sam Pratt, Sophie Male and Chloe Spiller, has already raised more than £700 via the internet at www.justgiving.com/AngelsDreamTeam/ "Angel has been here for more than a year and has finally found a home," said Claire.

"But she needs the vital operation in order to be able to go out and enjoy the new life that is waiting for her.

"We're training hard for the walk, which involves over 5,000 feet of ascent."
