TAUNTON Deane Council is getting £47,000 more than it expected from the Government over the next three years.

It will receive an extra £20,000 in rural services funding in the year from April, an extra £10,000 the following year and £17,000 more in 2017-18 in transition funding.

Deane House leader Cllr John Williams welcomed the news at a time of steep reductions in the revenue support grant the Government gives to local authorities.

He said: "We have experienced massive cuts to our budget over the last three years of around 37 per cent totalling £2.2million to our central Government grant funding so recognition that we have tremendous financial pressure is great news.

“Every little helps and it does give the council more time to plan for and deliver the significant savings needed to balance the books over the medium term.

"It is estimated the council will need to make annual savings of at least £2.4million per year by April 2019, which remains a significant challenge.”
