HEAD teacher Jenny Venning and 16 pupils from North Town Primary School, Taunton, visited Taunton MP Jeremy Browne at the House of Commons.

The children, who on the school council, were pioneering a safety measure, School Trips Plus Messaging System, which aims to ensure any children lost on a school trip can be easily reunited with their supervisors.

Mr Browne has tabled a Commons motion welcoming the efforts being made by North Town to improve pupil safety and reassure local parents.

He said: "In addition to having a tour of the building, they were also able to stay and watch some of the debates from the public gallery - maybe one of them will be inspired to stand for election to Parliament in the future.

"I am supportive of the Schools Trips Plus Messaging System being used by North Town to improve the safety of their pupils - each child wore a tag with a phone number which could be used to contact the teachers.

"Parents are understandably anxious about the security of their children, but it would be a great shame if this prevented children from going on school outings which broaden their horizons and live in their memories."
