A TEAM from Minehead Middle School won the regional final of the prestigious Rotary Youth Speaks competition on Saturday, March 19.

Competing against teams from across the whole of the South West region, the team of Jack Lintern, Sophie Wood and Freya Jenkinson impressed the judges with their speech on the subject of 'It's the Taking Part that Counts'.

The team were commended for their performance in the Intermediate category, in what was a tough competition. They now qualify for the national final, which will be held on May 7 in Preston where they will compete against teams representing the whole of the UK and Northern Ireland.

English teacher Mrs Gibbs said: "We are overjoyed with this result, which was thoroughly deserved.

"These children are a shining example of how hard work, good character and sheer determination can bring great rewards. We are exceptionally proud of them."

Headteacher Paul Rushforth added: "Well done to the whole team for their spectacular efforts so far and a special thank you to Mrs Gibbs for coaching them so well. We are very proud of them all."
