CROWCOMBE and Stogumber CE Primary Schools are seeking sponsorship from local people and businesses for a trip by train to Minehead in June.

West Somerset Railway volunteers will be visiting the schools beforehand to talk to pupils about their work on the Railway.

Many of the children watch the train go by and will enjoy the whistle in the distance, but after asking the Head teacher if they could go on the train one day, unfortunately the cost is just too high to a small rural school.

Head teacher Julie Norman said: “We are hoping to use the steam train from Stogumber to take all the children from the two schools to Minehead for the day as part of our study theme this term of ‘water’.

"This should be an inspiring trip and we have exciting activities planned on the train itself and at Minehead when we get there.

"Our children are potentially the next volunteers on the railway and we aim to inspire them to what to engage in such an important part of their heritage.”

But even at the West Somerset Railway’s special group discount rate, it will cost nearly £700 to take the 98 pupils and staff on the trip.

West Somerset Railway volunteer and Stogumber resident Robin White, who has been helping organise the trip said: “The young people of the area are the lifeblood of the Railway, and we are delighted to have been asked to arrange this trip.

"We hope local people and businesses will be generous in helping to cover the cost.”
