A MAN has died after his car crashed into a telegraph pole and then a wall near Taunton.

The incident happened shortly after 2am at Creech Heathfield, at the junction of North End and Charlton Road.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "A car appears to have crossed over a carriageway to the opposite side of the road, where it was in collision with a telegraph pole and then a dry stone wall.

"The male driver of the vehicle was declared dead at the scene shortly afterwards."

Ray Hallett, who lives 20 metres from the scene of the crash, said he was alerted to the accident by a huge bang.

"I thought it was a bottle of wine going in the garage," said Mr Hallett.

"Then a couple who had been passing by knocked on the door and called for help.

"We went out and saw the car tipped on its side and waited for the police. There was nothing we could do for the driver.

"When a policeman arrived we turned the car over.

"People have been to the site and left flowers today.
