A CAR park dubbed "an absolute disgrace" is being repaired within the next fortnight - just as a driver warned it could land the council with compensation claims for damaged vehicles.

John Hunt, of Bishop's Hull, said the state of roads in Taunton is "atrocious", with the entrance to the Boots car park in Crescent Way "the worst example".

He added: "The road surface here is not only an absolute disgrace, it has become a danger to both vehicles and pedestrians.

"Many of us take pride in our county town. We want the town to thrive and attract visitors from far and wide - I doubt they’ll be terribly impressed with this obstacle course when they arrive."

Peter Ireson, of Jeffreys' Way, has called for the "pot-hole ridden entrance area" to be resurfaced.

He said: "This would not only reduce motorists stress but also vehicle suspension stress which must soon, surely, start to cost the council when drivers submit claims for damage.

Considering this to be the town's central car park it is an absolute disgrace...the impression this gives to visitors is one of neglect."

A Taunton Deane Borough Council spokeswoman said the Crescent Car Park will be closed for two nights on Monday and Tuesday, July 4 and 5 for resurfacing and filling in potholes.

She added: "The work is being carried out by Taunton Deane Borough Council in the evening to minimise disruption for drivers as The Crescent is one of Taunton’s busiest car parks.

"The closure will operate from 5.45pm with the car park re-opening as normal the following mornings.

"Anyone who is unable to move their car before the closure will be let out by those working on the site.

"However, as the Crescent is usually virtually empty by the time of the closure, numbers are expected to be very low.

The work is being done as time and the weather have taken their toll on the car park’s surface and is part of a package of car park investment agreed by the borough council.

"Advance signs warning of the closure will be going up to make sure people are aware of the work."
