IT'S the eighth national Armed Forces Day today (Saturday, June 25), which celebrates the commitment of current and ex-service personnel.

Taunton Deane Mayor Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams led a ceremony ahead of the raising of the flag outside the Deane House, Taunton, earlier this week.

Representatives from 40 Commando Royal Marines, The Rifles, the Taunton branch of Royal British Legion, the Taunton branch of Royal Army Service, the West Somerset PRA, the Somerset Army Cadet Force and the Somerset Ex Services Association attended the ceremony conducted by the Mayor’s chaplain the Rev Preb Christopher Rowley.

The Mayor’s Cadet, Lance Cpl Paul Bowler, who was chosen to provide support at community events throughout the year, was also there along with the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Hazel Prior-Sankey.

Mrs Stock-Williams said: “The council is proud to show its support for the Armed Forces, who have a long association with Taunton Deane.

"Respect shown by the local community goes a long way to sustaining the morale of the Armed Forces and their families on this day and throughout the year.”

The flag is also flying outside County Hall, home to Somerset County Council in Taunton.

A county spokeswoman said the flag has been flying all week to honour serving troops, families, veterans and cadets.
