A NUMBER of schools around Somerset will be closed as teachers prepare to take part in strike action.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) announced plans last month to hold a strike on Tuesday, (July 5), in protest at school funding and teacher workloads.

A statement on the NUT's website says: "The strike demands are to increase funding to schools and education, guarantee terms and conditions in all types of schools, and to resume negotiations on teacher contracts to allow workload to be addressed.

Schools which will be closed on July 5 due to strike action in Somerset are:

  • Bridgwater College Academy - the nursery will be open however 

  • Crowcombe CE VA Primary School, Crowcombe

  • Hambridge Primary School, Hambridge, Langport

  • Haygrove School

  • Holway Park Primary School Taunton

  • Holyrood Academy - closed for students in Years 9 - 11, open for sixth form students and students in Year 7 and 8 and those joining Year 7 in September 

  • North Curry CofE Primary School

  • Selworthy School, Taunton

  • Stogumber CE VC Primary School, Stogumber

  • The King Alfred School

  • Wembdon St George's C of E Primary School, Wembdon, Bridgwater

  • Wembdon St George's CofE Primary School

  • West Somerset College, Minehead

Schools partially opened:

  • Hamp Nursery & Infants School, Bridgwater - 

    Classes 2 and 9 will be closed on July 5 due to industrial action.  All other classes will be open as usual.  Classes 2 and 9 will reopen on July 6.

  • Huish Episcopi Academy -  The school is open for Years 7, 10 and 12. Trips to Wimbledon, Cambridge University and Bristol Zoo will go ahead as normal. The school is closed for Year 8 and Year 9 students.

  • Sky College - Due to industrial action the school will be partially open for all boys boarding on Monday night. All other students based on mainsite will be at home. Those boys at Bridgwater Base and other alternative provisions should attend.

  • Somerset Bridge Primary School, Bridgwater The school will be open to pupils in Year 1, Year 5 and Year 6, and closed to pupils in Reception, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 on Tuesday July 5 due to industrial action.  The school will reopen to all classes on Wednesday July 6  The nursery will remain open on Tuesday July 5.
