PLANS for a new petrol station in Taunton have been given the green light.

Taunton Deane Council has approved Asda's plans to build a 24-hour filling station at its site on Creechbarrow Road.

There will be four petrol dispensers with eight filling positions, which would be self-service pay-at-pump and the site will also include a jet wash facility.

The station will be built near to the entrance of Asda's car park - resulting in the loss of 41 car parking spaces, reducing the total number of spaces from 510 to 469.

Changes to the Asda site itself include proposals to widen access to the site, and a new pedestrian island so that pedestrians can safely cross.

A spokesperson for Asda said: "We're delighted with the recent approval of our petrol station, offering a more convenient and competitively priced place to fill up."

There were concerns raised by nearby neighbours the UK Hydrographic Office about traffic implications.

In a letter to Taunton Deane planners, they said: "There are traffic implications given Asda has only one means of entry for customers - our concern being excessive queues making access to the UKHO difficult at peak times.

"There will be an impact on the local environment and nearby residential homes having a 24/7 fuel filling station, which will be illuminated throughout the night."

However, in the application, Asda said the build would not cause huge amounts of extra traffic in the area.

Asda also say that the build of the petrol station will drive down the cost of petrol in the area.

It is not known yet building will start or when the petrol station will be open, however planners at Taunton Deane have said work should start within the next three years.
