UPDATE:
WE can reveal that the 'small test tube' attached to a lamppost in Haydon Road, Taunton, is monitoring air quality.
The diffusion tube in Haydon Road is one of 45 across Taunton Deane.
A Taunton Deane Borough Council spokeswoman said: "They are harmless and absorb nitrogen oxides given off from emissions from vehicles.
"The data collected is used to monitor the air quality in Taunton Deane so please do not touch/remove them."
* A SMALL test tube has been attached to a lamppost in Taunton, and we are keen to find out what it is for.
The item, spotted by a pedestrian on Thursday, has been attached to the lamppost in Haydon Road for at least a couple of weeks.
