A SOUTH SOMERSET country park has seen an influx of visitors thanks to the new Pokémon Go craze.

Ham Hill is one of the district's Green Flag Award winning spots and has seen a marked increase in visitors as they search for Pokémon such as Clefairy, Drowzee and Snorlax.

The site is also home to a number of Poke Stops for on-the-go gamers.

However, rangers from the sites are urging visitors to be cautious when trying to locate and catch their favourite Pokémon.

Katy Menday, countryside manager said, “It’s great to see so many people enjoying the fresh air and visiting the country parks, but we must stress how important it is to be vigilant of your surroundings, particularly at Ham Hill where there are old quarry faces and steep falls, and this year a prevalence of the yellow flowering plant wild parsnip that can cause burns if the sap gets on skin and isn’t washed off.

"Just make sure you keep your eyes open to enjoy the views whilst also playing the game.”

The park has also issued a number of safety tips, including not going to an isolated area alone, concentrating on the dangers around you and being careful when crossing the road, not making yourself vulnerable, not trespassing on private property, and not wading through long vegetation.

Councillor Sylvia Seal, portfolio holder for leisure and culture said, “Whether you are a Pokémon Go player or not, there are plenty of activities and green space for all the family to enjoy. Bring a picnic and enjoy the sites – remember to put your rubbish in the bins that are provided and be aware of your surroundings if you are hunting Pokémon.”

Other groups have also warned Pokémon Go users of the possible dangers of the game

Now, Network Rail has issued a warning to commuters using trains.

The sign says: “Enjoying Pokémon Go? Please consider the following...

“Remember to stop, look and listen when approaching the railway. Concentrate – it’s easy to get distracted by your phone, music or by catching Pokémon.

“It is illegal, and very dangerous to trespass on the railway – don’t risk it for a game. Railway stations are for everyone to enjoy, but please be respectful of other station users.

“Be aware of your surroundings and familiarise yourself with the warning signs – lights, barriers, alarms etc.”

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service also tweeted discouraging people to Pokémon Go and drive as it would be unsafe.

A Twitter warning was also issued by First Buses, stating that although free wifi and charging points on buses is a tempting offer for Pokémon trainers, they should never walk into a bus depot in search for Pokémon.
