A GROUP of four Taunton girls are recovering from blisters after walking 100km walk in 23 hours.

The efforts of Proclaimers team Emma McCormack, Helen Jones, Laura Phelps and Kristen Lambert raised almost £2,000 on the Trailwalker challenge on the South Downs.

They put months of training to good use as they walked through the night from Petersfield to Brighton, in Sussex, in aid of Oxfam and The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

Kristen said: "We were really pleased with our time as had been aiming to complete the walk in under 24 hours.

"We believe we were the second all female team to complete the walk with all four members finishing.

"Before the end the Commander of the Queen's Gurkha Signals reminded everyone of the importance of teamwork, endurance and leadership and these things certainly helped us through.

"We were also heard from Oxfam's chief executive Mark Goldring, who told us what a difference the money raised makes to those effected by the Nepal earthquake, as well as supporting their works in over 90 countries, fighting poverty by responding to emergencies, through development projects and campaigns to tackle the root causes."

She added that the four were assisted by a support crew, who supported them with snacks, plasters and fresh socks at the nine checkpoints.

"We ended the challenge with a sprint finish to ensure that a team of four riflemen didn't beat us across the line," said Kristen.
