IS this the oldest person in Taunton Deane?
Incredibly, Ivy Tooze has lived through two world wars, four monarchs and 20 prime ministers, and witnessed the advent of technology that could barely have been imagined when she was born in 1911.
And remarkably Mrs Tooze, who puts her longevity down to a laid back approach to life, still lives at home on her own.
"I'm very happy. Having my 105th birthday was nothing different," said Mrs Tooze, a widow of many years, who lives in Lower Foxmoor Road, Rockwell Green.
"The secret to being 105 is to have no worries - worrying is what makes people ill.
"I've got some good relations and friends who look after me. That makes a lot of difference."
She was born in Bridgwater on August 9, 1911, moving to Wiveliscombe as a child and then to Rockwell Green in the 1950s.
She worked in Fox's factories in Wiveliscombe and then Wellington, manufacturing tens of thousands of puttees for our troops, before retiring 40 years ago.
Mrs Tooze, who was secretary of the local pensioners' club and went to bingo until recently, enjoys keeping up with the news and doing crosswords.
Her cousin Les Reed, who visits to care for her during the day, said: "She's very happy although she doesn't get out these days.
"I go round to care for her every day and her friends pop round to see her.
"She didn't want a fuss on her birthday - she wanted it to be just like any other day."
She is the oldest user of the Deane Helpline, a 24/7 service run by Taunton Deane Borough Council that clients can access for help by the touch of a button.
Deane Helpline control centre manager Gillian Allgood and emergency response officer Shaun Rolls dropped by to deliver a bouquet of flowers and a handmade card to help celebrate her landmark birthday.
Cllr Terry Beale, executive councillor for housing services, said he was delighted the service had helped Mrs Tooze celebrate such a milestone.
He said: "It’s remarkable to think she has witnessed so much during her long life – on behalf of the council I would like to congratulate her.”
