TWIN sisters scored 13 goals between them as Helston Ladies made a stunning start to their first ever season in the Cornwall Women's League.

Sasha and Smara Sparkes, aged 25, were instrumental in their team's astonishing 27-0 victory over Culdrose Ladies at Kellaway Parc on Sunday.

The Falmouth-based women, together with Roxanne Cook and player-manager Charlotte Bond, played for Torquay Utd Ladies last year but found the travelling too much.

Charlotte said: "We have set up the team from scratch - we got the players together, then found sponsorship, before approaching Helston FC and then the league.

"Our aim this year is promotion - Torquay Utd are two leagues above us at the moment so we would love to try and get there."

Helston were due to start their campaign last week but opponents St Breward were unable to raise a side.

The Blues led 12-0 at half time against a plucky RNAS Culdrose team, which has changed considerably this year due to deployments from the base.

Sasha scored nine goals, with defender Smara grabbing four. Dana Wheat also scored four and there were hat-tricks from Bond and Keri-Ann Moxom. Cook scored two, Rachael Hannaford was also on target and an own goal completed the one-sided contest.

"Credit to Culdrose, they never gave up and kept trying to the very end," added Charlotte, whose team entertain Wadebridge on Sunday (2.30pm).
