MINEHEAD is set for a spectacular Christmas event after all.

Last week the Gazette reported that the organisers of Minehead Community Christmas Extravaganza had been forced to cancel the event due to a lack of funding among other issues.

However it has emerged that the Friends of Minehead First School group is looking to take over the reins.

The Friends of Minehead First School already run a Christmas Fayre and want to make it bigger and better this year so that there is a Christmas event for the whole town.

A spokesman for the Friends group said: "After the loss to the town of the Christmas Extravaganza the Friends have decided to hold a spectacular event that involves the whole community and will also help raise funds for the school.

"We will be having singing, reindeer, Father Christmas, Christmas market, dancers, a raffle with some fantastic prizes and hopefully much, much more.

"We would like to give a massive thank you to the Minehead Events group who are really supporting us with this both financially and with some great advice."

The event is set to take place on Saturday, December 10.

Paul Booker from Revive Minehead, one of the small team behind the originally planned Christmas Extravaganza, said: "We are extremely happy that the community will have an event on the Saturday, December 10, albeit not one that incorporates the businesses with late night shopping.

"We still feel we made the right decision in cancelling the original Extravaganza, as we were being hindered by other's decision making, simply taking too long."

Mr Booker said although the Christmas Extravaganza had proven to much for a trio to organise, the team are hopeful of putting on a Summer Extravaganza event in 2017, provided they can get more volunteers to help out.

Minehead Town Council will be running a 'low-key' lights switch on event, with the date still to be confirmed.
