TOUCHING tributes have poured in after a 15-year-old girl was killed in a late-night crash in Taunton.

The teenager, who has not yet been named, was a student at the Taunton International School and suffered fatal injuries in the incident, which happened on Monday at 9.10pm on Greenway Road.

Another 16-year-old girl also suffered a serious arm injury in the incident and is recovering in hospital.

A man in his 20s was arrested by police following the crash on suspicion of dangerous driving, and has since been released on bail.

Police have launched an investigation into the crash, and are appealing for witnesses or anyone who has any information to get in touch.

The crash rocked the school community, and scores of tributes have been posted at a special memorial set up in the school’s grounds, and on social media.

Taunton School headmaster Lee Glaser led the tributes to the girl, describing her as “a young woman with great potential.”

His statement read: “She was a young woman with great potential and a wonderful personality. Words cannot describe the sadness felt by our school community.

“We are in a state of devastation and shock. I now ask that you allow her family and the Taunton School community the space and privacy needed to mourn the loss of such a special person. We ask for your prayers at this very difficult time.”

Tributes describing the crash as “heartbreaking” and a “tragedy” were also posted on Facebook.

Sally Ann Reed said: “My heartfelt condolences go out to this poor young lady’s family and friends, such devastating news.”

Nigel Lang said: “Such tragic news, my thoughts and prayers are for this young woman, her family and friends at Taunton School.”

Helen Rawle said: “Saddened to hear the news of the loss of one of the students. Thoughts are with the families and friends of the young lady involved.”

Pauline Bonner said: “Heartbreaking, love and thoughts to her devastated family, friends and whole school community.”

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police asked anyone with information about the crash said: “We are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident who may have information to help our enquiries. Anyone able to help is asked to contact the force collision investigation unit on 101.”
