AN electrician's own take on TV show DIY SOS has helped a dream come true for a youngster with a severe muscle wasting condition.

Good Samaritan Shane Harrison stepped in when he heard Ilton boy Joel's wish was to have a hot tub, but his family were struggling to pay for it.

Sparky Shane, of ASM Electrical Taunton, and his two apprentices did the main set-up work for the tub and later returned to install lights and complete the electrical work in a cabin built to house it - all for free.

His efforts mirror those of the Nick Knowles team on DIY SOS, when professionals and volunteers muck in to undertake building projects to improve the lives of people in need.

"I got the lead from MyBuilder, who said someone was looking for a bit of help at as little cost as possible," said Shane, of Bishop's Hull.

"We installed it for free - the labour was a couple of hours and with the materials would have cost around £300.

"It's the first time I've done anything like that, but I always believe that if you can help someone, then great."

He has now been nominated by Jemma Harris for the MyBuilder Job of the Year award, which has a £5,000 prize to be split between the winner and the customer.

She said: "I advertised on MyBuilder as my nine year-old old daughter Molly wanted to get her best friend Joel - who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy - a hot tub to make one of his wishes come true.

“I openly advertised that money was limited and that if anyone could help for free it would be appreciated. Soon after, to my surprise, Shane contacted me saying he would help.

“He quickly arranged to look at the job to see what we needed, and he did the main set-up work for the hot tub for free. He paid for the materials, and he and his small work team worked for one cup of tea.

“We then did all we needed to makes Joel’s wish come true, with thanks to so many people’s kindness. Shane even came back to install lights and finish electrical work in the cabin we built over the hot tub.

“We can’t thank Shane and his team enough, so to have the opportunity to nominate them for this helps me feel I’ve done something to repay them for the care and kindness they showed.

"They did everything to our rushed timescale and fitted us in without expecting a penny from us.

“Molly was able to make a young man’s wish come true - but only because of the help of such kind and amazing people."
